I am a marketer and intend this to be a blog on marketing ideas and business ideas…
You’re a what?
A Marketer, somebody who works in marketing (Note: not necessarily good at!).
So Anybody who works in Marketing is a marketer?
Well, guess so…!
So when I hire a marketer for my firm or business I might not be getting a good marketer?
Not necessarily.
So How do I know if they’re a good marketer or not?
mmmm… Good question..
What makes a good marketer? Ok so first off I guess the term marketer is pretty loose as marketing has so many facets your business may only require a specialist in one field. But still, how do you know if they are any good or not? Is it the number of letters after their name, past experience or something else entirely?
To me a good marketer is one who can listen, understand and acheive agreed realistic targets within a set timeframe. This is a very basic look at a very important question but I believe that although a qualification can tell you a certain level of competence it does not necessarily give you an insight into some truly crucial elements of marketing. For that matter this would be true in consideration of any consultancy role.
A good marketer needs to listen to the requirements of the client or company they are working for. They need to have a firm understanding of the marketplace and competitors within it and from this they need to set out detailed aims and objectives that are agreed in advance between themselves and the Company to acheive the desired end result(s). The strategy developed from this should be detailed and open, by which I mean no secret formulas!, with good tools in place to measure the success. At the end of the day if you are happy with the results and confident in what you are being told then half the battle is won.
